Autumn 2008

Fall books for young readers

Fall season is always a time for our favorite authors to release new books. This year's offerings are particularly good, especially in children's books. The following books are the newest releases in continuing stories:

Christopher Paolini's long-awaited installment in his Inheritance series is Brisingr. Not quite the end of the story, this sequel to Eragon and Eldest will enthrall fans. Paolini estimates that there will be one more book to conclude his story. $27.50 Knopf

Brian Jacques continues his Redwall series with Doomwyte. $23.99 Philomel Eulalia is just out in paperback. $7.99 Ace

Inkdeath is the third wonderful book adventure by Cornelia Funke. Follow Meggie, Mo and other favorite characters from Inkheart and Inkspell to the conclusion of this exciting story. $24.99 Scholastic

For those who loved the Penderwick sisters, there is a delightful sequel, The Penderwicks on Gardam Street. $15.99 Knopf

Battle of the Labyrinth is the latest in Rick Riordan's Percy Jackson & the Olympians series $17.99 Hyperion

Samuel Blink and the Runaway Troll is the sequel to Matt Haig's Samuel Blink and the Forbidden Forest. $17.99 Putnam

Artemis Fowl's adventures continue with The Time Paradox $17.99 Hyperion

Tony DiTerlizzi and Holly Black continue the Spiderwick Chronicles with three more titles. The second in the Beyond the Spiderwick trilogy is A Giant Problem $10.99 Simon & Schuster

Lamplighter is the second Monster Blood Tattoo book and is over 600 pages long! $19.99 Putnam

There is a new Charlie Bone book by Jenny Nimmo, Charlie Bone and the Shadow $12.99 Scholastic

Fire Within is the latest in Chris D'Lacey's Dragons series $16.99 Scholastic

The newest Ranger's Apprentice book is Sorcerer of the North $17.99 Philomel

And of course, Jan Brett has a new book, Gingerbread Friends, for those who want to know what happened after The Gingerbread Baby concluded. $17.99 Penguin


Favorite Adult Authors' New Releases

Ivan Doig's Eleventh Man, follows the story of the members of a famous University of Montana football team as they go their separate ways during World War II. $26.00 Harcourt

Terry Tempest Williams' Finding Beauty in a Broken World offers her thoughtful look at what it means to be human in an era of physical and spiritual fragmentation. $26.00 Pantheon

James Lee Burke continues his Dave Robicheaux series with a change of setting for Dave and his buddy Clete Purcel. In Swan Peak, they become involved in a murder investigation while spending time in Montana during a break from the harsh landscape of post-Katrina Louisiana. $25.95 Simon & Schuster

Baxter Black's newest collection, The World According to Baxter Black: Quips, Quirks & Quotes, features cowboy slight of hand, humor, and perspective along with authentic cowboy cartoons by A-10. $19.95 Coyote Cowboy Company

The ever prolific Alexander McCall Smith has two new books: The Miracle At Speedy Motors is the latest Precious Ramotswe story.$22.95 and The Comforts of a Muddy Saturday is the newest Isabel Dalhousie $23.95 Pantheon
