Books for young sleuths

There are a couple of new books this season that test the reader in his or her ability to find and interpret the clues to a mystery.

Get A Clue is a series of picture mysteries by Julian Press. Each book has several mysteries to be solved, some quite challenging, with clues to be found in pictures opposite each page of text. The answer is revealed in the next page of text, so the story can progress even if the clue is not spotted. I read TREASURE OF BLACKBIRD ROCK. It was great fun looking for the clues and trying to solve the mysteries along with the three young characters. The other volume out now is OPERATION GOLDEN SCEPTER $4.99 each, Grosset & Dunlap

Another new series debuting this fall is The 39 Clues. This series of 10 books features one continuing mystery which readers are challenged to solve along with the books' characters. The books come with game cards and online bonuses. There are even prizes available for clever readers.

In the first book, THE MAZE OF BONES, the matriarch of the Cahill clan has died. At the reading of her will, family members discover that they have the choice of receiving a million dollars or forgoing the money to participate in a hunt for a prize that could lead to untold power. Book one finds heirs Amy and Dan (and their intrepid au pair Nellie) off to France on the trail of a clue involving Benjamin Franklin. Through many adventures and narrow escapes our heroes progress toward their goal. They must be clever, brave and above all, must trust no one. This series is off to an exciting start. $12.99 Scholastic

Attention Harry Potter Fans!

THE TALES OF BEEDLE THE BARD, a Wizarding classic, first came to Muggle readers' attention in the book known as Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. Now, thanks to Hermione Granger's new translation from the ancient runes, we present this stunning edition with an introduction, notes, and illustrations by J. K. Rowling, and extensive commentary by Albus Dumbledore. $12.99 Scholastic
